The Complete IPMAT Guide
Everything you need to know about cracking IPMAT: from mastering higher mathematics and verbal ability to interview strategies for the prestigious IIMs.
1. Overview / Introduction
What is the exam: The Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test (IPMAT) is a premier national-level entrance exam for admission into the 5-year Integrated MBA programs.
Conducting body: It is independently conducted by IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak. IIM Ranchi accepts Indore's scores, while JIPMAT is conducted by NTA for IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu.
Who should give it: Driven Class 12 students aiming for top-tier management and corporate careers without waiting for graduation to tackle the brutal CAT exam.
Courses offered: 5-Year Integrated Program in Management (BBA + MBA).
2. Importance of the Exam
The IPM program has become one of the most coveted programs in the country for high-schoolers.
- Unmatched Career Opportunities: Upon completing the 5 years, students sit for the exact same placements as the flagship 2-year MBA batch, unlocking ₹25-30 LPA average packages.
- Top Colleges Accessible: IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, and IIFT Kakinada.
- Holistic Learning: The first 3 years of the degree aren't just BBA; they involve rigorous mathematics, statistics, economics, and humanities, sculpting a fundamentally superior student.
- Why it is competitive: IIM Indore offers around 150 seats for the IPM program, and around 30,000+ top students apply, making the acceptance rate less than 0.5%.
3. Tentative Timeline
IIMs follow a strict timeline. Note that IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak have separate notifications.
| Event | Expected Timing (Indore/Rohtak) |
|---|---|
| Official Notification Release | February |
| Application Form Start Date | 1st Week of March |
| Application Last Date | Last Week of April |
| Admit Card Release | 2nd Week of May |
| IPMAT Exam Date | 3rd Week of May |
| Result Declaration (Shortlist) | 1st Week of June |
| Personal Interviews | June to Mid-July |
| Final Admission Offers | End of July |
4. Exam Structure (IPMAT Indore)
Unlike standard exams, IPMAT Indore is notoriously difficult due to its sectional time limits and inclusion of short-answer (SA) questions with no options.
Section 1: Quantitative Ability (Short Answer)
- Number of questions: 15 Questions.
- Time duration: 40 Minutes.
- Marking scheme: +4 for correct, No Negative Marking.
- Difficulty level: Hard. You must type the integer answer.
Section 2: Quantitative Ability (Multiple Choice)
- Number of questions: 30 Questions.
- Time duration: 40 Minutes.
- Marking scheme: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect.
- Difficulty level: Moderate to Hard (Includes Higher Math).
Section 3: Verbal Ability (Multiple Choice)
- Number of questions: 45 Questions.
- Time duration: 40 Minutes.
- Marking scheme: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect.
- Difficulty level: Moderate (Heavy focus on RC and grammar logic).
Note: IPMAT Rohtak only has MCQs across Quant, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal (40 each) in 120 minutes. JIPMAT is similar to Rohtak.
5. Subject Requirements (Maths Mandatory?)
A common myth is about subject requirements. Let's clarify:
- Is Mathematics compulsory in Class 12? Historically yes, but currently, students from ANY stream (Arts, Commerce without Math, Science) are officially eligible to apply to IIM Indore and Rohtak, provided they meet the aggregate percentage criteria in 10th and 12th (usually 60% for UR).
- However, the IPMAT syllabus heavily features Higher Mathematics (Matrices, Determinants, Calculus, Probability, Logarithms), which puts non-math students at a massive functional disadvantage. Intense coaching is required.
6. Is there a General Knowledge Section?
Unlike other BBA entrance exams, IPMAT Indore and Rohtak do NOT have a General Knowledge or Current Affairs section in the written test.
- The written test is purely aptitude (Quant and Verbal).
- However, GK and Current Affairs are heavily tested in the crucial Personal Interview (PI) phase, which holds substantial weightage in final selection.
7. Target Score & Sectional Cutoffs
IPMAT enforces strict Sectional Cutoffs. If you score 100/100 in Verbal but fail the Quant cutoff by 1 mark, you are disqualified.
- Safe Score (Indore): Out of 360 marks, a safe score to secure an interview call is generally 170-190+ for the General/Unreserved category, assuming sectional cutoffs are cleared.
- Section-wise Breakup (Estimated safe cutoff):
QA (SA): 16-20 Marks (4-5 correct)
QA (MCQ): 35-45 Marks (9-12 correct)
VA: 110-125 Marks (28-32 correct) - Strategic Insight: Attempting the Quant Short Answers is physically draining but critical. Because there's no negative marking, attempt all 15, even if guessing.
8. Documents Required
During Application:
- Valid personal Email ID and Mobile Number.
- Scanned passport-size photograph and signature.
- Valid photo ID proof (Aadhar/Passport).
- Caste/Category Certificate if applicable (very strict formats required by IIMs).
During Interview/Admission:
- Original mark sheets of Class 10 and Class 12.
- Extracurricular certificates (helps significantly in PI).
9. Application Form Details
Form release: March. The forms are hosted directly on iimidr.ac.in and iimrohtak.ac.in respectively.
- Registration: Create an account using email.
- Upload Docs: Photograph, signature, categories.
- Academic Details: Input 10th marks and 12th expected/actual marks correctly.
- Payment: The unreserved application fee is relatively high (approx. ₹4000+ per IIM). Hence applying strategically is important.
10. Correction Window
IIMs are generally unforgiving about form errors.
- Typically, there is a very brief 1-2 day correction window provided for minor errors like spelling mistakes in parent names or uploading a clearer photograph.
- Cannot Edit: Category and test city preferences are heavily locked once payment goes through. Always double-check category certificates before paying.
11. Detailed Syllabus Layout
| Section | Core Topics | Crucial High-Weightage Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Quant (Arithmetic) | Percentages, Profit/Loss, Time Speed Distance, Time Work, Mixtures. | Time Speed Distance, Ratios. |
| Quant (Higher Math) | Number System, Algebra, Logarithm, Matrices, P&C, Probability, Trigonometry, Set Theory. | P&C, Probability, Logarithm, Algebra. (This differentiates IPMAT from CUET). |
| Verbal Ability | Reading Comprehension, Para jumbles, Grammar, Vocab, Sentence Completion. | Reading Comprehension covers 30-40% of the section. |
12. Exam Pattern Summary Table (Indore)
| Sections | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Ability (SA) | 15 | 60 | 40 Mins |
| Quantitative Ability (MCQ) | 30 | 120 | 40 Mins |
| Verbal Ability | 45 | 180 | 40 Mins |
| Total | 90 | 360 | 120 Mins |
13. Preparation Strategy
- 1-Year Horizon: Start in Class 11 end. Spend 6 months purely on conceptual clarity of Higher Math and building a reading habit (Editorials). Shift to intense sectional testing from January.
- Tackle Sectional Timing: 40 minutes for 30 hard Quant MCQs is daunting. You must develop the skill to instantly identify 'speed-breaker' questions and abandon them.
- Reading is Non-Negotiable: The VA section features dense passages (philosophy, economy, psychology). Reading 'The Hindu' or 'AEON essays' daily is effectively studying for IPMAT.
- Mistakes to avoid: Over-focusing on boards. Boards fetch you nothing but a 60% eligibility tag; IPMAT fetches you the IIM seat. Do not sacrifice IPMAT prep for 95% in boards.
14. Best Books & Resources
- Quantitative Aptitude: Arun Sharma's 'How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for CAT' (Level 1 and 2 exercises). NCERT Class 11/12 Maths for Calculus and Matrices.
- Verbal Ability: Word Power Made Easy (Norman Lewis), Objectives General English (SP Bakshi).
- Interview Prep: Stay fully updated with financial news, international relations, and your 12th board subjects.
- EPA Material: Specially curated EPA higher-math foundation modules designed specifically for commerce without math students to bridge the gap.
15. Participating IIMs & Programs
| Institute | Accepted Exam | Intake Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Indore | IPMAT Indore | 150 Seats |
| IIM Rohtak | IPMAT Rohtak | 165 Seats |
| IIM Ranchi | IPMAT Indore & SAT scores | 120 Seats |
| IIM Jammu | JIPMAT (NTA) | 120 Seats |
| IIM Bodh Gaya | JIPMAT (NTA) | 120 Seats |
16. Selection Process & Interview
The written test only gets you shortlisted. The final admission offer is a composite score.
- Written Test Weightage: Usually holds 65% weightage in the final merit list computation.
- Personal Interview (PI): Holds 35% weightage. The interview panels consist of senior IIM faculty. They test academic rigor (asking technical questions from your Class 12 subjects), general awareness, and your personality/reasoning.
- Seat Allotment: Final merit list is released. Waitlists move gradually.
